Understanding the Indian Health Service (IHS)
The Indian Health Service (IHS) is part of the Department of Health and Human Services and it exists to offer federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.
The service started because of a special agreement between the government and Indian tribes made back in 1787. This agreement shows the government’s commitment to these communities.
Today, the IHS is dedicated to raising the health status of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level possible.
IHS provides comprehensive health services to about 2.6 million people from 574 federally recognized tribes across 37 states.
